Bone marrow response to erythropoietin in polycythemia vera and chronic granulocytic leukemia.

It increases erythropoiesis by inducing primitive cells to differentiate into erythroblasts that subsequently mature and form nonnucleated red cells.’ 3 In contrast to polycythemia secondary to hypoxia, erythropoietin does not appear to be responsible for the increased red cell production in polycythemia vera. This is suggested by the following observations: urine and serum erythropoietin levels are normal or decreased in polycythemia vera,4’5 and erythropoietin added to in vitro marrow cultures from patients with polycythemia vera fails to elicit any stimulatory effect.67 Chronic granulocytic leukemia is a panmyelopathy and, in that respect, resembles polycythemia vera. Both have therefore been classified as myeloproliferative diseases.8 The purpose of this study was to determine whether erythropoietin was capable of stimulating erythropoiesis in marrow cultures obtained from patients with chronic granulocytic leukemia as compared to polycythemia vera.

متن کاملErythropoiesis in the anemia of bone marrow failure.
The quantitative relationship between red cell volume, erythropoietin level, and erythropoiesis was evaluated in 43 human beings. Results in normal man were compared with studies in patients with anemia from bone marrow failure and with polycythemia vera. The maximum erythropoietin excretion after bleeding normal men was similar to the basal levels found in patients with chronic anemia of simil...
متن کاملDiagnosis and treatment of thrombocythemia in myeloproliferative disorders.
Myeloproliferative disorders originate in the clonal expansion of a transformed pluripotential hematopoietic progenitor cell. This results in a group of syndromes that include polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, chronic myelocytic leukemia, and agnogenic myeloid metaplasia. Diagnostic criteria forpolycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia were codified by the Polycythemia Vera St...

INTRODUCTION The World Health Organization classification of chronic myeloproliferative disease encompasses eight entities of bone marrow neoplasms, among them Breakpoint cluster region-Abelson murine leukemia viral oncogene homolog 1-positive chronic myeloid leukemia and polycythemia vera. Polycythemia vera requires, in the majority of cases (95%), the negativity of Breakpoint cluster region-A...
